About the center

The foundation of the first Institute of Second Education in the city of Algeciras officially dates back to the academic year 1849-50, which makes it the second oldest in all of Western Andalusia.

When the Institute of Algeciras was created by Royal Order in 1849, it was granted a local character. This fact determined its initial stages since it depended on the Algecirean council not only for the allocation of spaces but for everything related to its economic support. For this reason, it will depend on the complex - and not always well - relations between the institute and the council, which are nothing but the result of the complex tensions in nineteenth-century Algeciras. It will be, then, the city council who will decide to house the institute first in a sumptuous rental house located in the vicinity of Imperial Street and who will decide to move it to the premises of the old and disentailed Mercedarian convent when, from 1851, the more and more The municipality's complex financial situation advised this change of location. As of 1854, the economic problems are aggravated by an unfavourable political situation and a year later the closure of the centre was requested from the city.

The first space where the refounded institute was located was the last floor of a private building located on the South Band of the Río de la Miel and which belonged - and continues to belong - to the González Gaggero family. This location did not favour the teaching work at all and from the first moments conflicts will arise between the teaching staff and the town hall, before whom better facilities are claimed. The situation worsens considerably in the first years of the Second Republic, where protests and confrontations between teachers and the municipal council will continue: demonstrations and dismissals will conclude with the transfer of teaching activity in 1933 to the old Kursaal building.

On the morning of October 16, 1942, rapid-fire broke out that engulfed the Kursaal building in a few minutes. The event, although it did not cause irreparable damage to the students or the teaching staff who were then inside, it did constitute a serious threat to the continuity of the centre in the city. The quick actions of the director and the mayor prevented it and just a month later the teaching activity was resumed in the unfinished building on the Calvario Heights. These works lasted until the following decade, when they began to emerge as what today we would consider as a reference centre, leading to the teaching of night high school in a pioneering way. In the sixties, there was a considerable increase in the number of enrollments and it emerged as the parent institute from which others were created in the region, such as those of La Línea, San Roque or Tarifa. As a result of this increase in enrollment, at the end of the sixties, the Ministry authorized the start of work on a new institute on the Carretera de Málaga. In 1969, with the inauguration of the new building, it will now house the Algeciras institute, while the old Calvario will be the headquarters of a delegated section. This anomalous situation will conclude the following year with the creation by decree of two new institutes: the Masculine, located in the new building, which will later receive the denomination of "Isla Verde" and the Feminine, in the old one, which will end up taking the denomination of our centre today.
